“Savina in the City” by Santana Bellas

“Savina in the City” by Santana Bellas
By Julia Childs

Savina is the type of beauty that exists as a reoccurring memory – if you see her once, you will know her for the rest of your life. A woman that eludes confidence, a sense of self, and a personal style that makes you rethink the constraints we place around fashion, it is no surprise that Santana Bellas continually captures her with ease. Taking us to a sunny afternoon in San Francisco, Bellas perspective is both intimate and playful.

When I look at the work that these two create together, I am reminded of how powerful a symbiotic creative union can be. As she moves through each frame, he follows her lead, creating a story that is fresh and unique. See for yourself below and keep up with more from Santana Bellas here.

Dreaming While Awake: Diving Into Lina Viktor’s Cerebral State

Dreaming While Awake: Diving Into Lina Viktor’s Cerebral State
By Julia Childs

I’m not sure I’ve encountered an artist as dynamic as Lina Viktor. She creates with a deep intuition – whether that be through painting or performance. Her work is informed by her keen sense of autonomy – in a 2014 interview with The Root, she adamantly stated, “While society wants to put you in a box, I’ve always been drawn to those that exist outside the box and whose vision transcends all of that. That’s how I see myself.”

tumblr_nz90azqS5z1u4l1i7o6_1280

It is with that vibrancy that we view her work and it is with that awareness of her independence that we understand her art is an extension of her narrative. Aside from the emotion tucked into each piece, spectators are treated to her exquisite craftsmanship that is exemplified in her key color palette of black, gold, and majorelle blue. At once a visionary and a creator, Viktor’s work reminds me of the in-between cerebral state I encounter during my dreams. A conscious dreamscape where I am free to explore, unrestricted from an earthly narrative and empowered in my own right. Care to join me? Check out my favorite pieces from Lina Viktor below.

Have a wonderful weekend!
By noreply@blogger.com (My Scandinavian Home)

I hope you have some fun plans over the May bank holiday – and above all else get a chance to relax! I’m leaving with you with the serene bedroom of Josephine Ekström here in Southern Sweden – if you look closely, you might catch a glimpse of the waves of the Öresund sea beyond.

Giving Back to Mother Earth: A Day on the Farm with Alma Community Outreach

Giving Back to Mother Earth: A Day on the Farm with Alma Community Outreach
By Julia Childs

In lieu of all that is happening in the world, we believe in supporting and uplifting those that are working to leave the Earth a touch better than they found it. Enter Alma Community Outreach. A program providing diversified curriculum in partnership with public schools located in low-income communities, the brains behind the purpose are strong, empowered, and inspiring. ACO teaches students about the process of harvesting, empowering students with knowledge on the food they put in their bodies and their own neighborhood food system. Taking a holistic approach to wellness, ACO works to support the physical, emotional, and social well being of the next generation.

IMG_9393

In addition to providing services that directly affect communities within Los Angeles, Alma has a farm based here in Los Angeles. On Earth Day, Live FAST joined the women of ACO and got our hands dirty. I made a point to ask each woman what keeps them motivated. As someone who admires those who do the work necessary to produce a better world, I’m always interested to know what keeps people propelling forward. Photographed by Nitsa Citrine and Tasya Van Ree of Women With Superpowers, the ladies dawned sustainable clothing from the Los Angeles-based SEEKERAWAVEAWAKE and EVERYBODY.WORLD and shared their wisdom with me.

Ashleigh Parsons and Courtney Guerra are two of the main brains behind the organization. Ashleigh, co-founder of Alma and founder of ACO, and Courtney Guerra, director of ACO, both share beautiful visions for the next generation. “I believe that in order to create a world that is more sustainable, we must teach the next generation to nourish themselves, nourish their community, and nourish their earth, ” states Ashleigh when asked about her personal connection to ACO. Courtney can visibly see her impact on the communities she serves, citing her son as a huge source of inspiration to keep investing in the future, believing that “the generations ahead of us hold the key to healing our planet, our communities, and ushering the world into a new global society.”

As they say, it takes a village, and the crew of talented women who keep ACO afloat are unique in their own right. Monzie teaches third grade and welcomed a wellness curriculum into her classroom with open arms. I asked what her motivations are, what keeps her invested in serving young, budding minds every single day. Her answer was simple, “Giving students access to information and empowering them to become biliterate, critical thinkers motivates me.” Her perspective is exemplary of ACO’s well-rounded, holistic approach to education. Araz Martin, ACO’s wellness curriculum teacher, believes in her daughter’s right to grow old and live a happy life – something that she says “begins with me the making right choices for the environment.”

Chelsea Hagler, the Senior Public Relations Manager at Equinox and a member on the ACO board alongside the vivacious and warm Vivian Ho, mentioned that nature is one of her mentors. Positioning Mother Earth as a mentor was a brilliant reminder that the planet we live on is far greater than any single organism. “Living systems grow and evolve in diversity, union, and resilience. It’s really a playful and creative thing – it amazes me that it’s doing so without any effort at all.” As I listened to each individual share their hopes and dreams for the future, I was enthralled by how forward thinking they are in their purpose. As someone who champions living in the moment, I felt like a student amongst gurus while I watched every woman work diligently in the moment while keenly focused on the future.

H44A7845
H44A9109

While I deeply admire each of the women connected to ACO, my interest was piqued by the volunteers that were on deck. Lisa Tahk, co-founder of Closer LLC, an agency that represents Korean fashion brands in the US market, volunteers her time in the classrooms and is motivated by empowering youth, reminding me that food is life, and life itself is energizing. Miye R McCullough, a creative producer for art/literary journal & knitwear line Hesperios, cited her father being a product of the Fresh Air Fund in Philly as a motivator. This prompted her to volunteer her time at ACO, as she realized that many conversationists and naturalists that she respects found their purpose through small grassroots organizations like this. Veda Romero sees ACO as an opportunity to offer solutions that can produce widespread change in the community she grew up in. Sylvia Chivaratanond, a curator and consultant here in Los Angeles, is motivated by justice in the world – a simple yet powerful driving force.

H44A8787
H44A9489

I suppose the most magical thing about this day was the diverse stories of the women involved. Each inspiring in their own right, every individual saw their high purpose reflected in ACO, deciding to join forces and create an unstoppable drive of positivity. Sample & Mavi in Rome

Sample & Mavi in Rome
By Chloé

Chloe Hill wearing Sample and Mavi In Rome

Hello from Rome!

I’m spending two weeks here before I head back to Sydney for fashion week next month. It’s my first time and although I don’t have a heap of time for the sights (I’m working on coolpretty.cool + freelance projects + travel stories while here) I’m still making an effort to get out and see something each day.

Yesterday was a the Colosseum at 6am. That’s because the day before I attempted the Spanish steps and Trevi fountain and had a near panic attack because of the crazy, insane crowds at both. So sunrise seemed a safe bet to avoid the tourists and is going to be my ongoing sight seeing strategy here!

The lovely, relaxed home of Amber Friedel

The lovely, relaxed home of Amber Friedel
By noreply@blogger.com (My Scandinavian Home)

Well hello there! I was going a bit stir crazy at home so I’ve camped out at my local coffee shop by the sea today. Sometimes all you need is a change of scene, right? And that’s exactly how Amber Friedel, owner of Etsy shop MiniRoseCo, and her husband Jesse felt while waiting for their second child. Four years ago, the pair moved from a small apartment to a lovely house in a ‘quintessential little place called Geneva, Illinois.’ Despite having lovely bones, it was in desperate need of renovation. The pair set about lovingly restoring it. Today the space is full of interesting details, vintage finds, Amber’s handmade wall hangings and bursts of colour including blue, blush and green. What a perfect family home?!

Credits: Home-owner – Amber Freidel. Photographer: Renee Higgins. Found via A Beautiful Mess.

What a great space? So personal and unique. I especially love the blue hue, and it ties the entire house together too.

Could you imagine introducing this tone to your home? Or perhaps there’s something else that stands out to you?

Get the look: sitting room – cushion,  Pick up a mustard blanket like this at H&M Home (I love this mustard velvet cushion/ pillow too!). Dining room – macrame plant hangings, Amber sells her handmade wall hangings here. Hall – pick up a vintage electric fan here (how lovely is this one?!). Bedroom – Amber sells this copper rail in her shop.

If you’d like to see more snapshots of Amber’s home you can always hop on over to her fab Instagram feed.

Oh and if you’re loving the blue tone as much as I am you might also want to check out ‘decorating with blue‘ – 26 homes all singing the blues (if this comes up first just skip over) – double coffee time!

Keep shining!

This week, we continue to introduce the nine newly acquired objects through this past weekend’s 31st annual Collectors Committee.

“La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France, (Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France)”, 1913, stands as one of the purest expressions of European modernism—as art, poetry, book making, and as a collaboration between Sonia Delaunay and poet Blaise Cendrars. The book is made up of a single sheet of paper, divided down the center, and folded like an accordion through twenty-two panels to the length of almost seven feet. It is meant to be seen and read at the same time, like a conductor reads an orchestral score, and is celebrated as much for its lyric beauty as for its unmatched composition of colors by Delaunay. #lacma #SoniaDelaunay #BlaiseCendrars #modernart #2017CollectorsCommittee http://ift.tt/2q7pqy9

A Long Way From Home: Beneath the Trees of Canggu with Artist Andy Wauman

A Long Way From Home: Beneath the Trees of Canggu with Artist Andy Wauman
By Erin Rose Belair

My afternoon with Andy Wauman and his fiancé Dewi in their jungle home outside of Canggu came at the very end of my solo trip through Bali. What I remember most about that afternoon is how the rain sounded against the massive leaves strung throughout the jungle. The size of the leaves in Bali astounded me, I didn’t know foliage came in those dimensions. I felt an immense sense of relief being in their home and in their company. I had been alone for six weeks and my conversation skills were stiff, my interests heightened. Andy made me coffee while the rain rolled in and we talked art, my travels, books, his new projects, and life on the island. The pair lives in an open air floor plan jungle house that feels part forest retreat and part magazine photoshoot ready.

0209995_0209995-R4-005-1

I originally knew Andy’s work from his Instagram account where he was shooting ample amounts of babes on nothing but expired film all over the world – particularly where he is living in Canggu. As the afternoon wore on and the rain settled, I learned that what I knew of Wauman’s art was rather a glittering pit stop in his long and impressive career as a contemporary artist. Now, after a brief break he is back in the full swing of it, currently traveling the world and fulfilling a long line up of live shows.

The images I shot here were taken over the course of the afternoon in and near his home. Wauman gifted me a roll of his coveted expired film to play with. He agreed, for this particular instance, to be the subject of the portrait rather than the shooter. This, in addition to the interesting timing of our encounter, has made these some of my favorite images from my trip. Months and months passed before I got the film developed back in the states. To be truthful, all of Bali seems like one hazy and sweaty dreamy, but this afternoon stands out, a vivid moment among those months. When I got the images back I reached out to Wauman to touch base on a few things from our chat and see where in the world he was at the moment.

0209995_0209995-R4-011-4

LF: You’ve been living in Bali now for how many years? Why Bali? Why Canggu?
AW: I’ve been living in Bali for over 4 years now. I ended up in Bali visiting a friend after a solo show I did in Hong Kong and I fell in love with the Island of the Gods. Canggu was a very nice community of artists and creative people that lived together with the local people, but this sadly changed into a place for yoga-headed vegan hipsters.

LF: Why did you fall in love with it? You’ve been all over the world, I imagine there are a lot of places to fall in love with.
AW: The energy of the island, the consistent surf, the tropical climate, but mainly the locals and their never-ending spiritual practice of deception and worship. The beauty is endless. This Island is soaked with spirituality. It feels like home to me now.

LF: An ideal day there looks like…?
AW: Early surf in the morning, then eating breakfast with my future wife, Dewi. After that, some studying – my main focus is my contemporary art.

0209995_0209995-R4-009-3
0209995_0209995-R4-019-8

LF: Tell me about the separation of self between Andy Wauman and @gutterdust.
AW: @gutterdust is on hold since last year. I stopped shooting for brands and I’m not sure what the next step is. Contemporary art has always been my main focus. When I landed on Bali, I decided to take a break from it and I started shooting.

0209995_0209995-R4-023-10

LF: What are you working on right now that gets you the most excited?
AW: Here you can find a list of future exhibition/projects I’m working on. Also, Dewi and I are preparing our wedding. So exciting.

LF: Congratulations! That’s very exciting. The work in these shows, they’re all over the world. What they are about?
AW: I’m working on a solo show for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which will be a reflection on Tantra energies and the Karma Sutra in the form of embroideries, using back silk, and sculptures in stone, that will represent the Tantric Goddess and the Heart Chakra.

LF: Are you interested in any new mediums lately? What might you get your hands into next?
AW: Yeah, I’m working on a new solo show ‘Pali iddci’ for Deweer Gallery, back home in Belgium. This show will reflect on Black Magic and Psychic Energies and it will be translated into a sculptural installation that will contain totem sculptures and bas relief sculptures in wood, using old traditional wood carving techniques from Java.

LF: Are you particularly looking forward to some places more than others? Why?
AW: This year is all about traveling through Indonesia with my future wife. We have a few nice trips planned ahead, but I’m very much looking forward to spend time with some local tribes in Borneo.

LF: Tell me more about this time with the local tribes in Boreno.
AW: The local tribes in Borneo will help me with the wood carving for my new totem sculptures 🙂

0209995_0209995-R4-027-12

LF: How do you feel when you are working, or creating?
AW: It feels like the most natural thing ever to me, it is constantly there, and it is never the same – it’s like a river of inspiration.

LF: Where is your favorite place to relax?
AW: My favorite place to relax is within myself, when I perform a meditation. This could be anywhere.

0209995_0209995-R4-035-16

LF: How do you drink your coffee? I have a bit of a ritual, so I am always curious.
AW: I switch between a boiling Hot Soy Cappuccino and an Iced Soy Cappuccino. Hehe.

LF: How fast do you live?
AW: I have a lot going on, but I’m definitely taking it slower than before. I wake up at 5AM and go to bed around 9pm.
